brief history of Lungholm Estate

The first Estate and Mansion on the present premises was built in 1434 - and named Olstrupgård - being under the governance of the much larger Krænkerup Estate - with a modest presence in the local community - until the legendary nobleman Palle Rosenkrantz acquired the Krænkerup Estate 200 years later. Palle Rosenkrantz expanded the acres of land and built a totally new property in 1639 that was nearly identical with the present Lungholm Estate. The two west- and east wings buildings are still in daily function and a part of the exciting Lungholm property. After some unstable years the Danish Prime Minister Christian Ditlev Reventlow took possession of the many estate houses and properties that was congregated under the Christiansborg County of 1729 and was given permission by the King to sell Lungholm Estate to the wealthy Baron Abraham Lehn in 1784 - who decided to convert his many properties into one "Entailed Estate".

The next generation of the Bertouch-Lehn family rebuilt the Mansion of Lungholm 1853-56 in gothic style with crow-stepped gable and created the park area in typical English landscaped style - which included serpentine lakes - winding drives - and clumps of trees in lawns that reached from the wooded distance right to the Manor house. In 1905 a huge tower was erected and connected to the Lungholm mansion – but was later dismantled in 1952. A thorough but careful renovation of the entire Lungholm Estate began in 2006 and was completed in 2009 - with a total refurnish and decoration of the interior too.
