Stork Fountain and Amagertorv
The
square around the Stork Fountain called Amagertorv,
has always been one of the most hectic pleases in town and
a meeting spot for many people for generations. Around Amagertorv
are some of the oldest building from 1600,
situated in Dutch Renaissance style from
the time when the square was the maim market place in Copenhagen.
Celebration
of a Royal Silver Wedding
In connection with the celebration of King Frederik
VIII (1843-1912 – ruled 1906-1912) and Queen
Louise’s (1851-1926) silver wedding
the Stork Fountain was given to them by the city
council in 1888 and inaugurated 1894. The
fountain is created by sculptor Vilhelm Bissen
(1836-1913).

Society of Copenhagen's Embellishment donated
the Stork Fountain to the city in connection with
the celebration of King Frederik VIII and Queen
Louise’s silver wedding in 1894. |

Underground
toilets
Later in 1900 the first public underground
toilets in Copenhagen was established and placed
at Amagertorv.
Graduated Midwife's
Since
1950, it has been a tradition for new graduated
Midwife’s to dance around the Stork fountain
- and during the 1960s the fountain became
the central meeting place for hippies and
provo’s from all over the world.
The
Stork Fountain has for generations been a very
popular meeting spot for Copenhageners and tourists.

has been a tradition every year since 1950, that
the new graduated Midwife’s danced around
the Stork fountain to celebrate their diploma together
with their families. The event gathers a lot of
cheerful spectators. |

Stork
Fountain and "Strøget"
The area around the Stork Fountain called "Højbro
Plads" (High Bridge Square) was a part of the
plan to extend the new Pedestrian Street "Strøget"
in Copenhagen (the world’s first shopping street), where
all traffic was excluded in 1967, when the
world’s longest pedestrian street was opened.
Location
The Stork Fountain is located very centrally on Amagertorv
right on the Pedestrian Street "Strøget”
and nearby The Church of The Holy Ghost -
Round Tower - Nikolaj Church
- Christiansborg Palace - Thorvaldsens
Museum - the Old Stock Exchange
and Holmens Church.
