Worth seeing sites - A four star experience!
  
 
The legendary Elephant Port at the tower building at New Carlsberg from 1901. The four elephants carved in granite from Bornholm symbolises brewer Carl Jacobsen’s four children. The inscription on the port is written in Latin: Laboremus Pro Patria - which means - let us work for our homeland.

The Carlsberg Beer is known all over the world and has a reputation as being “Probably the Best Beer in the World”.

The Founder
The Carlsberg Brewery was founded by J.C Jacobsen and established outside the city ramparts of Copenhagen – where the first brew was a reality in November 1847. The important Carlsberg Laboratory was opened in 1875 to develop a method for propagating pure yeast - which revolutionises the brewing industry – as the founder was very interested in brewing technology and modern brewing techniques that could improve the quality of his beer – which later made his Lager Beer very popular. The Carlsberg Brewery was named after the founder’s son Carl Jacobsen and the location where the brewery was placed at Valby hill.
 
The founder of Carlsberg J. C. Jacobsen was a Danish industrialist and philanthropist and for founding the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876 to secure the family brewery for the future.
Carl Jacobsen - the son of the founder opens a brewery under the name New Carlsberg. The founder J.C. Jacobsen changes the name of his brewery to Gamle (Old) Carlsberg.
 
First export and growth
In 1869 Carlsberg exports it first barrel of beer to Edinburgh - Scotland and trough the years - the Carlsberg brand can be found in 160 different countries together with its other principal brand Tuborg - which are the two most widely sold beers around the world. The company operates brewing facilities in Singapore – Malawi – Germany – Italy - Hong Kong - Cyprus and a number of other countries and maintains licensing agreements for distribution of its brands worldwide. The Carlsberg Group is one of the largest brewery group’s in the world employing about 50,000 people.
 
The Carlsberg Laboratory was established in 1875 to develop a method for propagating pure yeast - which revolutionises the entire brewing industry.
The New Carlsberg complex in 1890 with modern production facilities was not capable to keep up with the heavy demand or consumption of beer.
 
The Founder's Son
The founder’s son Carl Jacobsen carried on his father's passion for beer making and he studied brewing methods both in Denmark and abroad before taking his place in the family business in 1871. Carl Jacobsen established his own brewery and named it New Carlsberg. New Carlsberg and his fathers Old Carlsberg were united in 1906 - as both father and son willed their breweries to a charitable Carlsberg Foundation J. C. Jacobsen had established in 1876. The Carlsberg Foundation assumed the running of the breweries - carried on scientific research in beer making through its Carlsberg Laboratory - and supported Danish history and culture as well as and arts through the establishment of several museums - the construction of many monuments and buildings throughout the city including The Little Mermaid - the Danish Museum of Art and Design and the impressive Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek - which houses one of the largest collections of antique art in Northern Europe.
 
The famous logo of Carlsberg Pilsner designed by Thorvald Bindesbøll and introduced in 1904. The logo has since been the world trademark for the Carlsberg Group.
The famous horse drawn Carlsberg carriage with the crossbreeds of Jutland horses distributing beer barrels in the city - is a great tourist attraction on the streets of Copenhagen.
 
Carlsberg City in the City
In 2006 the Carlsberg Group decided to move the entire production of beer and beverages from its facilities at Valby to Fredericia – located on the east coast of Jutland. After more than 160 years of beer production on the same spot at Valby - it was a reality that Carlsberg ended its production here for ever. To use the old properties and the 300.000 m2 of land and former brewery - it was decided to develop the left premises into a brand new urban city and district – with condominiums – shops – businesses – parks that will be integrated into the site’s heritage buildings and landscape. The new Carlsberg City will be turned into a green city oasis for all Copenhageners.
 
The entire Carlsberg production facilities were shut down in 2006 and will be turned into a new city district called Carlsberg City.
At the Carlsberg Visitor Centre one can taste the different types of beer or beverages that Carlsberg produces and distributes around the world.
 
The Visitor Centre
The Carlsberg Visitor Centre is located where the first Carlsberg Brewery was established in 1847 at Valby. Here one will find the museum and the first production plant – the in-house Jacobsen House Brewery – the stables and old beer lorries plus free tasting of the famous Carlsberg beers and beverages – which is included in the entry ticket.
 
Location
The Carlsberg Visitor Centre - Museum and the original brewery is located almost 5 km from the City Centre of Copenhagen and in the heart of the Valby district.
